PIMPLES EVEN AFTER MENOPAUSE

PIMPLES EVEN AFTER MENOPAUSE

Q: I am a 52-year-old woman. I have had oily skin and have been prone to acne and whiteheads since adolescence. They have regularly appeared on my face and back.

Dermatologists and skin care specialists have prescribed Roaccutane which I have been taking for quite a long time.

Although my complexion greatly improved, I decided to stop the medication when I reached menopause two years ago and other parts of my skin became dry.

However, now that I have passed that phase, my face is beginning to be oily again with pimples and whiteheads. What should I do to treat this?

A: Some women continue to have acne even when they are in their 40s and 50s. However, most will eventually find that their complexions improve after they reach menopause. It is interesting that you still have acne and an oily face at this stage of your life.

This indicates that there is still substantial male sex hormone being produced as that brings on all these problems. However, it is likely that with the passage of time, these male sex hormones will dwindle and cause fewer problems.

Your current options include the following: Firstly, you can go back to Roaccutane but at a much reduced dosage. This will reduce the oiliness, pimples and whiteheads but you may experience the minimal skin dryness that you have experienced before.

Otherwise, you can try topical Clindoxyl gel or topical benzamycin gel that will control your pimples and whiteheads.
